The Village of El Portal is a secluded, modern Garden of Eden that is bordered at the north by Miami Shores and its southern border is The Little River. Its population is just under 3000. It was incorporated into its own entity in 1937, complete with its own city government and police force. Some areas of the small village are famous for their archeology and carry a rich history filled with debate and opinion as to their origin. The city itself is an escapist's dream juxtaposed with an otherwise rapid concrete aggregation along Miami-Dade.
One of the most revered areas in El Portal, and for that matter, in the entire county, is the Indian Mound in Sherwood Forest. It is one of the highest points in Miami-Dade and its history dates back to the year 600 when ancient Tequesta Indians migrated and settled at the mound while passing by on The Little River, as the mound was one of the few areas above water.
